Kreuzblick

Location and name

Pfeddersheimer Kreuzblick is a single-vineyard site in the Pfeddersheim district of Worms in Rheinhessen. The site belongs to the Wonnegau and to the Liebfrauenmorgen region, and lies between Kriegsheim and Pfeddersheim. Its name goes back to the view from a wayside cross.

Soils and wine character

In this site, loess over pararendzina, as well as gravel, sand and loam as Rigosol, occur. The loess soil is calcareous, deep, loamy and water-retentive. The soil shaped by gravel, sand and loam is stony and more permeable, but in dry years it is more susceptible to drought stress. With the loess and pararendzina soils, full-of-fruit, fresh and comparatively light white wines are associated; the gravel-sand-loam soils stand for firmer, more structured wines, as well as a tendency towards Pinot varieties and red-wine styles.

Grape varieties and cultivation

For an experimental Riesling plot, planting from the year 2000 on 5BB rootstock is documented. The row spacing is 1.80 metres, the vine spacing 1.05 metres, and the planting density is about 5,259 vines per hectare. Chardonnay is also documented as a wine from Pfeddersheimer Kreuzblick.

The Pfannebecker winery cultivates its vineyards, including Kreuzblick, with vine pruning by hand, work on the canopy and a grape selection at harvest according to the guidelines of organic farming.

Historical reference and maturation

In 1960, Weingut Pfannebecker built its current estate on the edge of the village of Pfeddersheim in the Kreuzblick site. This involved a development from mixed agriculture to wine-growing. The documented Pfeddersheimer Kreuzblick Chardonnay by Goldschmidt is fermented spontaneously, matured in wood and bottled unfiltered.
