Kranzberg

Location and classification

Kranzberg is a single vineyard within the Großlage Gutes Domtal in the Nierstein area. It is located in the municipality of Dalheim and extends along the eastern, southern and western side of the town. The elevation is 160 to 200 metres above sea level, and the aspect ranges from north-east to north-west.

Soils and geology

The site includes clay marl of the Mergel-Pelosol type. The deep, calcareous clay soil contains moisture-retentive clays, is rich in nutrients and shows limited water permeability as well as aeration. In addition, loess of the Löss-Pararendzina type occurs: a deep, calcareous, clayey silt soil with good water retention, aeration and root penetration. Fossil-rich sands are assigned to the Stadecken formation and were formed around 30 million years ago in the Mainz Basin.

Wine profile

The marl-Pelosol soils are associated with full-bodied, dense, rich wines and wines with moderately high acidity, combining mature tropical and stone-fruit flavours. On the Löss-Pararendzina, delicate, fruit-forward, medium-structured and refreshing wines are described with notes of apple, peach, pear and citrus.

History and vineyard register

The wine-growing site was documented in 1418 under the name off dem Crausberge; the name is said to derive from a personal name. The planted area is 142.0 hectares; the status relates to the 2024 harvest.
