Kranzberg vineyard site
The Kranzberg vineyard site extends along the eastern, southern and western sides of the town. It covers 135 hectares and lies at an elevation of 160 to 200 metres, with an orientation from north-east to north-west. The Kranzberg is classified as a single vineyard site in the Nierstein area and within the larger site Gutes Domtal.
Soils and history
The location comprises marl clay soils and loess soils. The marl is a deep, calcareous clay soil formed from clay-rich deposits of the Tertiary sea, while loess is described as calcareous wind material deposited during the Ice Ages. Fossil-rich sands are assigned to the Stadecken formation and originated about 30 million years ago in the Mainz Basin. In 1418, the vineyard site was documented under the name off dem Crausberge; the origin is probably a personal name.
