Königshof

Location and classification

The Königshof is a registered single vineyard site in the wine-growing region Mittelrhein, in the area of Marksburg and within the Großlage Herrenberg. The site is in the cadastral area of the municipality of Vallendar and bears the official number 320609 in the official directory of vineyard sites.

Topography and soils

The vineyard site comprises an exposed steep slope facing south-west with a gradient of around 60 percent, as well as flatter areas under vines. The steep slope has slate soils with greywacke and is equipped with drip irrigation.

Vines and wines

In spring 2012, as part of the re-cultivation of a steep slope that had become overgrown for decades, around 7,000 vines were planted using modern cross-terracing. In the flatter areas Riesling, Chardonnay, Rivaner and Spätburgunder grow; on the slope Würzer is planted for the production of sparkling wine. The wines are described as fresh and fruity, with a spicy and mineral character. The sparkling wine Vallendarer Königshof is made from the Würzer grapes.

History

In the past, the wine-growing area was linked to a state wine school and lay fallow for decades before cultivation was resumed. Since 1983, the Vallendarer Königshof has been in the sole ownership of J. P. Zwick.
