Vallendar

Location on the Rhine

Vallendar lies on the right bank of the Rhine opposite the inhabited river island of Niederwerth. The town is situated in the Rhine valley at the transition from the Westerwald to the Neuwied Basin and is surrounded regionally by the Westerwald, the Eifel and the Hunsrück.

History

In historical records, Vallendar is mentioned for the first time in the year 1056. The building of the former wine tavern “Die Traube” dates from 1647 and is regarded as the oldest wine house in Vallendar.

Viticulture in the Middle Rhine

Vallendar belongs to the wine-growing region Mittelrhein. The single vineyard Königshof is assigned in the official vineyard register to the wine-growing region Mittelrhein, the Loreley area, the Großlage Marksburg and the cadastral district of Vallendar. The site is listed with operating number 320609; the notation “k. A.” for the planted area, according to the register legend, stands for ownership exclusively by an operating farm that cultivates the vineyard.

Landscape and wine character

The Middle Rhine has a mild climate with many sunny days. The Rhine serves as a heat store, while the valley slopes offer protection from cold winds. Viticulture takes place mostly on steep slopes and on terraces. Regional grape varieties include Riesling, Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder and Müller-Thurgau; Riesling accounts for the largest share of the planted vineyard area and is described as mineral, delicately aromatic and characterised by lively acidity.
