Knopf

Location and classification

Knopf is an officially registered single vineyard within the collective vineyard Gutes Domtal, in the sub-region of Nierstein, in Rheinhessen, and in the cadastral area of Hahnheim. The vineyard site lies north-west of Hahnheim towards Wahlheimer Hof. In the 2024 vineyard register, it is listed for the municipality of Hahnheim under number 720408.

Relief and soils

Knopf is a hill formed in a round shape, with an altitude of around 140 to 220 metres. Its aspect ranges from south-west to south. The soil is classified as marl and pelisol and consists of calcareous, clay-rich deposits associated with the Tertiary sea. It is deep-rooting, rich in lime and high in clay capable of holding water; it has limited permeability to water and air, as well as a high nutrient content. Its warming capacity is medium, and rooting is difficult.

Vines and wine style

The Hahnheim section of the single vineyard comprises, according to the 2024 vineyard register, a planted vineyard area of 66.1 hectares. Riesling is identified as the main grape variety. For a parcel of the Hahnheimer Knopf, silvaner vines of around 50 years old are documented at Weingut Abthof. The regional description links the Rieslings from this site with potential for ripeness. The marl and pelisol soils are associated with full-bodied, dense and rich wines with moderate acidity and a creamy texture, as well as ripe fruit notes of apricot, mango and honeydew melon.

Name and vineyard work

The name Knopf refers to the hill’s round shape, which is compared to a knob. For wines from the Hahnheim Knopf, Weingut Klostermühlenhof documents hand work in the vineyard and the selection of ripe, healthy grapes. The selected grapes are transported there in small containers and processed carefully in the cellar.
