Location and classification

Klosterpfad is a legally registered single vineyard site in the municipality of Rhodt under Rietburg, in the cadastre district of Rhodt. The wine-growing site belongs to the growing region Pfalz and to the district of Südliche Weinstraße. Its official vineyard site number is 810608. Klosterpfad is assigned to the Großlage Ordensgut and, according to the 2024 vineyard register, comprises a planted vineyard area of 72.6 hectares.

Topography, climate and soils

The wine-growing site lies directly behind the village of Rhodt under Rietburg. A documented description characterises it as around 70 percent flat and 30 percent sloping. Warm air is well retained in Klosterpfad, while cooling air from the surrounding valleys reaches the site only to a limited extent.

The soils are described as deep loamy soils, heavy clay, loess loam, as well as mixtures of loam and sandy loam.

Grape varieties and wine styles

Plantings or wines from Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Weißburgunder (white Pinot), Scheurebe, Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Meunier are documented. The Klosterpfad wines include dry Weißburgunder, dry Syrah and a Scheurebe Spätlese. A described Syrah shows spicy-peppery aromas, pronounced density, complexity and elegant acidity.

Name and vinification

The name Klosterpfad refers to an old path that led from the vineyard site to the former Cistercian nuns’ monastery Heilsbruck in Edenkoben. For a documented Syrah, selected grapes from individual parcels are hand-harvested. The wine is fermented spontaneously on the pomace, macerated for 14 to 18 days, and then aged for 12 to 14 months in small oak barrels.
