Location and landscape
Rhodt under Rietburg is a municipality on the German Wine Route in the Pfalz. Vineyards surround the settlement, while the Pfälzerwald nature reserve adjoins it to the west. The climate is considered mild and favours, alongside wine-growing, the cultivation of southern fruit trees.
Rietburg and history
The Rietburg ruin lies above Rhodt at about 535 metres on the north-eastern slope of the 618-metre-high Blättersberg. The castle probably came into being in the second half of the 12th century; Konrad von Rietberg is mentioned in 1204 as the first documented lord of the castle. Wine-growing has been handed down in Rhodt since Roman times; in the Middle Ages the place was known for Traminer wine.
Vineyard sites
The legally defined single vineyard sites Klosterpfad, Rosengarten and Schloßberg belong to the Pfalz wine-growing region, South Wine Route area, and to the Großlage Ordensgut. The 2024 list of vineyard sites states that, in the municipality, they have 72.6, 94.9 and 68.1 hectares of vines under cultivation.
Rhodt Rosengarten
The Rosengarten lies in the southern part of the Rhodt vineyard and extends for about 2.2 kilometres in an east-west direction. Documented soils include loess loam, calcareous marl and Buntsandstein; the Schloßberg is characterised predominantly by red sandstone. In the historic Rosengarten, around 400 vine stocks that are more than 400 years old grow on roughly 900 square metres, mainly Traminer with individual Silvaner vines. They continue to produce grapes for Gewürztraminer with a rose-like aromatic character.
