Location and classification
Rosengarten is an officially registered single vineyard (Einzellage) in the wine-growing region of the Palatinate (Pfalz), in the area of Südliche Weinstraße and the large vineyard classification of Ordensgut. The site carries the official wine-growing site number 810609 and is located in the cadastral district (Gemarkung) of the municipality of Rhodt under Rietburg in Rhineland-Palatinate. In the 2024 register of wine-growing sites, 94.9 hectares of vineyard area are recorded.
Topography and soils
Rosengarten lies on a gently south-facing slope with long periods of sunshine. Higher-lying parcels preserve more acidity due to their elevation. Westerly winds that flow in through the Modenbachtal can dry vines and grapes quickly after rainfall. Documented are clay marl (Tonmergel), loess (Löss) and loess clay (Lösslehm); further descriptions also mention clay, sandy clay and calcareous marl.
Grape varieties and wines
In parcels of Rosengarten, among others, Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder) are planted. Further documented grape varieties are Gewürztraminer, Gelber Muskateller, Dornfelder and Portugieser. The historic parcel contains mainly Traminer vines as well as individual Silvaner vines; the wine produced from this is made as Gewürztraminer and combined with the rose scent typical for this grape variety.
Historic parcel
According to local tradition, the historic parcel already existed before the Thirty Years’ War from 1618 to 1648. Vines are still standing there that are more than 400 years old. Around 300 vines grow on about 600 square metres and, depending on the vintage, produce approximately 150 to 300 litres of wine per year. The training system has been renewed over time; today, the vines are planted in further machine-suitable row and vine spacing.
