Klostergut Fremersberger Feige

Location and History

The Klostergut Fremersberger Feige is the historical fig monopoly of Feigenwäldchen on the Fremersberg near Baden-Baden and Sinzheim. The name goes back to fig cultivation by Franciscan monks; fig trees are still found at the site. The first documented winegrowing at the Klostergut Fremersberg is dated to 1750.

Site and Vines

The site is situated in a forested valley basin with steep terraces. The central garden plot is enclosed by dry-stone walls. The soils consist of weathered red sandstone; in the Pinot Noir parcel, red slate is also found. The monopoly is planted predominantly with Riesling and includes a small Pinot Noir parcel. Very old Riesling vines show clones that may have originated before the mass-propagated vine material of the 1970s and 1980s.

Microclimate and Cultivation

The location is characterised by warm daytime temperatures, cool night air and a low risk of frost. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically; from the 2022 vintage onwards, this work is certified according to the Demeter scheme.

Wines and Ageing

Riesling produces a dry still wine as well as a Riesling sparkling wine in the Extra Brut style. The 2024 vintage of the dry Riesling has 12% alcohol, 7.4 g/l acidity and 0 g/l residual sugar and matures in a large barrel made of Fremersberger oak. The sparkling wine ferments in the bottle using the traditional method and is stored on the lees for more than 42 months. The documented Pinot Noir is a dry red wine with a cooler style, freshness and fine structure; it matured for more than 22 months in barriques.
