Location and classification
The monastery garden is a single vineyard site in the Bingen area and belongs to the Großlage St. Rochuskapelle. The wine-growing site is located in the municipal area of Zotzenheim in Rheinhessen and covers 49.3 hectares.
Relief and soils
The gently sloping site has south-west and north-west orientations. The soil is described as marl–pararendzina formed from calcareous loams and sands that originated from deposits of the Tertiary sea. Deep limestone with a high proportion of source clay, limited water storage available to plants, and restricted permeability and aeration shape the conditions at the site.
Wine style and name
The terroir profile links the monastery garden with dense, powerful, full-bodied and expressive wines with balanced acidity. White wines are associated with juicy exotic fruit notes, red wines with dark fruit and smoky spice. The name is derived from the former ownership of an old monastic estate.
