Klostergarten

Location and Profile

The monastery garden is a single vineyard in Sprendlingen in the Bingen subregion of Rheinhessen. It belongs to the large vineyard of Abtey. The vineyards lie at 120 to 260 metres above sea level and are oriented west to south-west.

Soils and Wine Style

Löss-Pararendzina and marl-Pararendzina have been documented. The loess soil consists of deep-rooted, calcareous, light loam with a clayey silt. The marl soil is a deep-rooted, calcareous clay with a high proportion of clay that can swell. On loess-Pararendzina, fine-fruited, refreshing wines are produced with notes of apple, peach, pear and citrus, a gentle acidity and moderate structure. Marl-Pararendzina is associated with dense, powerful and full-bodied wines; white wines show aromas of exotic fruit, mango, honeydew melon and apricot, while red wines show dark fruit and smoky spice.

Climate and Grape Varieties

The wine-growing region of Sprendlingen has a sheltered climate with mild winters and warm summers. Annual rainfall is about 500 to 600 millimetres, with most of it falling during the growing season. In the named Sprendlingen vineyard sites, including the monastery garden, Riesling, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Dornfelder and Spätburgunder are grown.

Name and Land Consolidation

The name Klostergarten is traced back to the monastery Nivelles’s historical ownership. The viticultural land consolidation procedure Sprendlingen III (Klostergarten) was included in 1994 under the new land consolidation procedures for vineyards.
