Klostergarten

Location and Extent

The Klostergarten is a legally registered single vineyard site in the wine-growing region of Pfalz, in the area of the Südliche Weinstraße and within the Großlage Trappenberg. The vineyard areas extend over the cadastral districts of Niederlustadt and Oberlustadt in the municipality of Lustadt, as well as over Zeiskam.

The official vineyard site directory lists 1.4 hectares in Niederlustadt, 73.6 hectares in Oberlustadt and 35.8 hectares in Zeiskam. In total, the site comprises 110.8 hectares.

Topography, Climate and Soils

The plots in Zeiskam and Lustadt are located on gently rising slopes facing south. The Zeiskamer Klostergarten is described as a comparatively cool, wind-exposed landscape.

The soil descriptions mention loamy sand, sand and loam, as well as loess loam. This means the soil composition varies within the site.

Grape Varieties and Wines

Riesling is documented in wines bearing the designation Zeiskamer Klostergarten. As important grape varieties from a producer whose sites include the Zeiskamer Klostergarten, Spätburgunder and Chardonnay are also recorded.

Documented wines from the Zeiskamer Klostergarten include dry Riesling with pronounced acidity, as well as descriptions described as mineral or salty.

Name and Wine Making

The name Klostergarten refers to remains of a former monastery that are visible at the site. For wines from the Zeiskamer Klostergarten, hand-harvesting and spontaneous fermentation are documented.

In the cellar, fermentation or maturation takes place in an old Mosel Fuder, with a long lees contact period, the omission of fining and filtration, and small additions of sulphur.
