Lustadt

Location and landscape

Lustadt is a municipality in the Southern Palatinate in the south-west of Rhineland-Palatinate. It lies between the Rhine and the Palatinate Forest at around 120 metres above sea level. The municipal area covers 2,376 hectares, of which around 860 hectares are arable land and about 750 hectares are woodland. The site of the local agricultural weather station is level and lies at an altitude of 129 metres.

History and agriculture

Lustadt was first mentioned in a document in the year 773. The former municipalities of Oberlustadt and Niederlustadt were merged in 1969 to form the municipality of Lustadt. The remaining full-time agricultural businesses include not only cultivation of arable crops, vegetables and fruit, but also viticulture.

Viticulture

Viticulture is represented by the single vineyard site Klostergarten. In the wine-growing region Pfalz it belongs to the Südliche Weinstraße area and to the Großlage Trappenberg. In the register of wine sites for the 2024 harvest, 1.4 hectares are recorded in the Niederlustadt cadastral area and 73.6 hectares in the Oberlustadt cadastral area; a further 35.8 hectares are in Zeiskam. A winery with vineyards in Lustadt lists green rows of vines and soil cultivation that is gentle on the ground as farming practices.
