Klostergarten

Location and Classification

The Flonheim Klostergarten is a vineyard site in the municipality of Flonheim in Rheinhessen. The site is classified as a single vineyard within the area of Bingen and the Großlage Adelberg.

Name and Soils

The name Klostergarten refers to areas that previously belonged to the Flonheim collegiate foundation. The site comprises Rotliegend/Rigosol soils with calcareous clay and fine sand deposits, as well as volcanic rock/Braunerde soils from dark volcanic lava of the Rotliegend. The Rotliegend/Rigosol soils are shallow to medium-deep, stony and clayey; the volcanic rock/Braunerde soils are shallow, strongly stony and sandy-clayey.

Climate and Chardonnay

The Klostergarten is described as cooler than the nearby site Kirchenstück, with later grape ripening. More than 40-year-old Chardonnay vines grow in the Klostergarten. The Chardonnay produced from them is described as filigree and fresh.

Riesling and Style

A documented Riesling from the Flonheim Klostergarten is made dry and described as mineral, fruit-forward and shaped by harmonious acidity. For the 2023 vintage, spontaneous fermentation and an extended time on fine lees are documented. The Rotliegend/Rigosol soils are assigned lively acidity, mineral components, pronounced fruit aromas and potential for ageing; the volcanic rock/Braunerde soils stand for lively minerality, elegant fruit, balanced acidity, structure and potential for ageing.
