Location and classification
The Klosterberg is an officially designated single-vineyard site in the Mainz district of Laubenheim. It belongs to the Nierstein area and to the Sankt Alban grand cru in Rheinhessen. The Rheinland-Pfalz wine sites register lists 15.3 hectares of vines planted. The site lies at around 90 to 110 metres above sea level and is oriented to the east.
Soil and history
The soil consists of loess-pararendzina, formed from calcareous wind-blown sediments laid down during the Ice Ages. It is described as deep, light loam with clayey silt, high water-holding capacity available to plants, a calcareous character, and good aeration and root penetration. Nutrient availability is high. The name Klosterberg refers to a former monastery estate.
Wines and grape varieties
Wines from the Klosterberg are described as having yellow-fruit aromas as well as notes of apple, peach, pear and citrus. Their profile is slender and refreshing, with gentle acidity, medium body and early drinking ripeness. Riesling is documented as Riesling Spätlese from Laubenheimer Klosterberg, Silvaner as wine from old vines. For a Riesling Spätlese, manual double-cane withdrawal and the splitting of the grapes are documented.
