Klosterberg

Location and soil

The Klosterberg is a vineyard site in Kiedrich in the Rheingau. The site, which faces south-west to west-south-west, lies at an altitude of around 260 metres and has slope gradients of 20 to 60 percent. The medium-depth to deep soils are stony and gravelly. They consist of variscan Devonian slate as well as older phyllite and phyllite gneiss; in parts, loess and loess loam occur.

Grape variety and wine style

For the plantings classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®, Riesling is specified. The Rieslings associated with the Kiedricher Klosterberg are described as wines with pronounced fruit acidity. They are considered light in character and suitable for ageing.

Name and cultivation

The name of the site refers to the historic Closterweg. This ran from Kloster Eberbach through Kiedrich to the Klostermühle near Eltville and crossed the vineyard.

For the Kiedricher Klosterberg Riesling by Robert Weil, strictly sustainable, yield-reducing work in the vineyard and a selective hand harvest are documented. The vinification includes differentiated must-fermentation times, spontaneous fermentation in a traditional double cask of 2,400 litres, as well as maturation on full lees without fining with sulphur up to filtration.
