Kloppberg

Location and classification

The Kloppberg is a single-vineyard site in Dittelsheim, a district of Dittelsheim-Heßloch in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The regional wine authority assigns it to the Wonnegau and the Großlage Pilgerpfad. The VDP classifies the Kloppberg as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®; the classified grape variety listed is Riesling.

Landscape and soils

The site, which is oriented to the east to north-east, lies at around 225 to 280 metres above sea level and has slope inclines of 10 to 30 per cent. It is one of the highest vineyard sites in Rheinhessen. The deep, calcareous clay marl soils are classified regionally as Pelosol and contain fine deposits of limestone. Cool evening winds help preserve the freshness of the grapes and support gradual ripening.

Vineyard area and wines

The documented cultivated area is given by the regional wine authority as 25 hectares, while the VDP lists a classified area of 8.28 hectares. Riesling is the dominant grape variety. The wines associated with the Kloppberg are described as having pronounced acidity and mineral character, as well as depth and elegance; a documented Kloppberg Riesling maintains freshness and shows concentration.

Name and vinification

The name “Klopp” is first documented in 1537 and derives from the Middle High German word “klupf” for hilltop ridge. For a documented Kloppberg Riesling GG from the Winter winery, fully ripe Riesling grapes were selectively hand-harvested towards the end of the harvest. After several hours of maceration time and gentle pressing, the wine fermented spontaneously, aged for one year on full lees and then in the bottle at least another year at the winery.
