Kirchberg

Location and Size

Kirchberg is documented as a single vineyard in the Baden wine-growing region and is assigned to the area of Kippenheim and Ettenheim. A local winegrowing cooperative reports about around 90 hectares of vineyard area, cultivated by just under 100 members.

Topography and Soils

The vineyard site lies high above the settlement on gently sloping small terraces with a south-south-westerly aspect. Deep loess-clay soils are described, with a high capacity for storing water and warmth. In addition, limestone occurs in the subsoil of the vineyard area; in parts, remnants of shell limestone are preserved.

Grape Varieties and Wine Style

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Kerner and Muscat are documented for Kirchberg wines. Other wines from the Kippenheim area include Pinot Blanc, Grauburgunder and Pinot Noir, including Pinot Noir as rosé. A Kirchberg Kerner is described as a semi-dry quality wine with fresh, mineral notes as well as citrus, green apple, mirabelle and peach flavours.

Wine-Growing History

Historical records provide evidence of wine-growing in the Kirchberg area going back to the monastery period. In 1551, a monastic wine cellar was built at Kirchberg.
