Kirchberg

Location and context

Kirchberg is a documented vineyard designation in Gottenheim on the Tuniberg in the wine-growing region Baden. The single site is assigned to the Tuniberg area.

Climate, landscape and soil

The vineyards of Gottenheim have favourable climatic conditions on the Tuniberg and a high level of sunshine. Part of the wine-growing area includes an old section that has not been reorganised for field consolidation, with hollow ways. The Gottenheimer Kirchberg is described as Jurassic limestone with a loess covering.

Grape varieties and winegrowing

In the Kirchberg area, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) and Müller-Thurgau, or Rivaner respectively, are grown. The vineyard plots are farmed according to environmentally conscious viticulture principles. The designation Kirchberg is documented for both white and red wines, including Gottenheimer Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder.

History and cultivation

Winegrowing in Gottenheim has been documented since 1086. In 1965 and 1966, around 70 of the approximately 110 hectares of vineyard land were voluntarily reorganised for field consolidation; the old vineyard remained excluded. For the Gottenheim winegrowers’ cooperative, the grapes are received and measured in Gottenheim, while wine production and marketing are carried out by Badischen Winzerkeller Breisach.
