Location and Landscape
The Kinzigtal lies in the Upper Kinzigtal at the transition from the Black Forest valley to the Upper Rhine Plain. Vineyard landscapes shape the surrounding area of Gengenbach, Berghaupten, Ohlsbach and Offenburg.
Climate and Soils
Influenced by the cool night and evening winds from the Black Forest, a distinct microclimate develops in the valley through the interaction of high temperatures. The vineyards also include steep sites. Documented are weathered soils from gneiss in Berghaupten as well as granite weathering soils and fertile loam soils in Ohlsbach.
Grape Varieties and History
In the Kinzigtal area, among other grape varieties, Spätburgunder, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Grauburgunder, Gewürztraminer, Scheurebe, Traminer, Weißburgunder, Chardonnay and Regent are grown. Benedictine monks are said to have planted the first vines here more than 1,000 years ago.
Work in the Vineyard and Cellar
Winegrowing includes sustainable cultivation, respectful handling of the soil and nature, as well as predominantly manual work on steep sites. White wine grapes are gently pressed and fermented in stainless-steel or wooden vessels depending on the type of wine. Further documented processes include yeast storage, classic mash fermentation for red wines, and maturation in new and used barriques.
