Kellersberg

Location and classification

Kellersberg is a legally defined single vineyard site within the municipal area of Gau-Bischofsheim. It belongs to the Großlage (large district) of Sankt Alban in the Nierstein sub-area of the growing region Rheinhessen. The official geographical name is Gau-Bischofsheimer Kellersberg.

Topography and soils

The vineyard site covers around 30 hectares and is located at an altitude of roughly 120 to 160 metres. Its aspect runs from the east towards the south. The soil profile is shaped by marl and pararendzina; beneath that are calcareous loams and sands from tertiary marine deposits.

Soil structure and cultivation

The deep, calcareous clay soils have a high proportion of clay capable of swelling, limited permeability and aeration, and a high content of nutrients and lime. Within the broadly dispersed site, there are also parcels with loess and darker clay soils. The Escher winery documents Dornfelder, Bacchus, Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder, Silvaner and Riesling there.

Wine character

The regional terroir profile links Kellersberg with dense, full-bodied, full-flavoured and expressive wines with well-balanced acidity. White wines are described as having ripe exotic fruit notes, while red wines are described as having dark fruit and smoky spice. Because of the wide distribution across the cadastral area, different climatic conditions are documented within the site.
