Location and Extent
The Kapellenberg is a single vineyard site that spans multiple municipalities in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The registered vineyard areas are located in the municipal districts of Ober-Olm and Klein-Winternheim. The largest contiguous area is found near Ober-Olm in the direction of Essenheim; smaller areas extend to the north-east towards Klein-Winternheim and to the east towards Ebersheim.
Climate and Topography
The south-facing location extends from approximately 190 to 250 metres above sea level. Its slopes are considered protected from wind and receive warming in the early morning as well as many hours of sunshine.
Soils and Grape Varieties
Documented soils include calcareous marl-clay as well as Pelosol and Rendzina formed from limestone. The marl is described as a deposit of the Tertiary sea; the limestone soils are linked to Tertiary sea deposits from a limestone algae reef. For wines with the designation Ober-Olm Kapellenberg, Riesling, Red Riesling and Dornfelder are documented.
Name and Wine Law
The name is derived from the St.-Valentinus Chapel at the edge of Ober-Olm. It was first mentioned in 1342 and expanded around 1720 in baroque forms. The Kapellenberg is registered as a Rheinhessen single vineyard site in the sub-region Nierstein and in the grand cru Domherr. In the 2024 vineyard register, 18.0 hectares of planted vineyard area are listed in Klein-Winternheim and 106.0 hectares in Ober-Olm.
