Location and Naming
The Kapellenberg is documented as a single-vineyard site, Munzinger Kapellenberg, in Freiburg im Breisgau. It lies at the south-eastern end of the Tuniberg, west of Freiburg-Munzingen, and is connected with the Erentrudiskapelle, which gives the site its name.
Climate and Soils
For the Munzinger Kapellenberg, a very mild, almost Mediterranean climate with many hours of sunshine is described. Beneath the site, the Tuniberg’s base consists of limestone, which is covered by a fertile, mineral-rich loess layer.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
Documented wines from the site include Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and Chardonnay. Represented are dry Spätburgunder, dry Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder, as well as a Spätburgunder rosé developed as a dry Kabinett. A Gewürztraminer is documented as a Beerenauslese with 113.0 g/l residual sugar. The wines are listed under the name Baden, among others as Qualitätswein, Kabinett and Spätlese.
History and Vinification
The Erentrudiskapelle on the Kapellenberg has been documented as a pilgrimage site since the eleventh century. After earlier destructions, the present chapel was rebuilt in the early eighteenth century. Documented wines from the site were matured both in stainless-steel tanks and in oak barrels.
