Location and Classification
Kallenberg is an officially designated single vineyard within the cadastral area of Bubenheim. It belongs to the winegrowing region of Bingen and to the Großlage Kaiserpfalz in Rheinhessen. In the wine locations directory of Rhineland-Palatinate, an area is listed under the name Kallenberg.
History and Name
The wine location was documented in 1403 under the name “an dem kalenberge”. The name is explained by the dialect word “Kalle”, derived from the Latin “canalis”, meaning watercourse or drainage ditch.
Soils and Wine Character
The loess-pararendzina consists of calcareous dust deposited during the Ice Ages. It forms deep, calcareous and nutrient-rich loam with high water-holding capacity available to plants, good root penetration and a high growth potential. On this site, yellow-fruited wines are described with notes of apple, peach, pear and citrus, moderate acidity and a slender, refreshing structure.
The limestone-rendzina is shallow to medium-deep, very calcareous and stony. It was formed from tertiary marine deposits in connection with a calcareous algal reef. However, the well-aerated and warmable soils have a low water-holding capacity available to plants and limited root penetration. The wines described from it are aromatic, lively, mineral and chalky, with notes of citrus, apple and gooseberry, and as ripeness increases, aromas of mango and passion fruit.
