Location and classification
The Iphöfer Kalb vineyard site is located in Iphofen in Franconia, to the east of the town, on its own independent hill. The hill was cleared in the Middle Ages and referred to as a strong mountain. Iphöfer Kalb is legally registered as a single-vineyard site and classified as a VDP.ERSTE LAGE®; the classified area covers 49.00 hectares.
Topography and soils
The slopes face south to south-south-west. The VDP profile states altitudes of 290 to 405 metres above sea level and slope gradients of 20 to 50 per cent; the municipal description specifies, for the south-south-western orientation, gradients of up to 60 per cent. The soils are described as medium Gipskeuper and light Keuper with a high proportion of limestone.
Climate and grape varieties
The vineyards around Iphofen including Kalb benefit from the dry climate of the Main valley and from Keuper soils that store warmth. For Iphöfer Kalb, Silvaner, Riesling and Scheurebe are listed as classified grape varieties.
Wine style
Wines from Iphöfer Kalb are described as elegant, harmonious and finely structured. The wines from the south-facing flank are considered lighter in style, while the cooler west side is associated with particularly aromatic Gewürztraminer.
