Location and classification
Kaffelstein is a registered single-vineyard site in Kreuzwertheim in the Main-Spessart district. It belongs to the Franconian Qualitätsweinanbau area and to the Churfranken region. The vineyard lies above the Main opposite Wertheim.
Site
The south- to south-southeast-facing site is at around 202 to 238 metres above sea level. The slope gradient is about 60%; the subsoil is documented as Buntsandstein (coloured sandstone).
Grape varieties and history
For Kaffelstein, Spätburgunder, Riesling and Silvaner are documented. According to information provided by the operator, the site was first mentioned more than 700 years ago. The former name Römerberg is linked here to a longer tradition of historical naming. A record from around 1800 documents an investigation into vineyard taxes and land prices for Kaffelstein in the area of Kreuzwertheim.
Documented wines
Documented Kaffelstein wines include dry or with low residual sugar Riesling, Silvaner and Spätburgunder wines from Franconia. The 2021 Riesling vintage was fermented spontaneously, matured for 32 months in stainless steel, including 19 months on full lees, and bottled unfiltered. The 2022 Silvaner matured for twelve months in French barriques after spontaneous fermentation. The 2020 Spätburgunder was fermented spontaneously, matured for 24 months in French barriques, including 20% in new wood, and bottled unfiltered.
