Location and classification
Kachelberg is a single-vineyard site in the Qualitätsweinbaugebiet Rheinhessen, the Bingen area and Großlage Adelberg. The vineyard register assigns it to the municipality of Wörrstadt and to the Rommersheim cadastral area. It has the vineyard plot number 710227; for the Rommersheim cadastral area, 98.2 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded.
Landscape and soils
The site is located to the west of Wörrstadt above the Neuborn swimming pool and is associated with the name Rommersheimer Kachelberg. It lies at approximately 150 to 235 metres above sea level; the slope orientations vary from north to north-west.
Documented are calcareous clay marl as well as Pelosol, and loess-influenced pararendzina. The deep, strongly calcareous and nutrient-rich Pelosol features source clay, restricted drainage and aeration, medium warming, and difficult root penetration. The pararendzina is deep, fertile and calcareous and has good plant-available water storage, sufficient aeration, good root penetrability and a high growth potential.
Documented wines
From the Wörrstadt Kachelberg, Riesling, Spätburgunder, Cabernet Sauvignon and Satin Noir are documented. A dry Kachelberg Riesling is described as finely structured, herbal and mineral, and fermented spontaneously with vineyard yeasts. The dry Spätburgunder is associated with a dense, berry-like and rounded style, as well as with loess, limestone and clay soils. Cabernet Sauvignon and Satin Noir are documented as dry, structured and full-bodied red wines.
Name
The name goes back to the field name Kachelberg. A depiction of the town’s history locates the vineyard site in the continuation of Rommersheimer Straße and possibly links the field name to ceramic shards found there.
