Location and Classification
The current Pesterwitzer Jochhöhschlößchen is located in Pesterwitz, a district of Freital in Saxony. It lies on the sunny southern slopes of the Pesterwitzer heights between the Elbe valley and the Erzgebirge, above the Weißeritz valley. Under wine law, Jochhöhschlösschen is assigned as a single vineyard site to the municipality and/or the district of Pesterwitz, and it belongs to the Großlage Dresdner Elbhänge.
Soil and History
The documented vineyard soil is a (standard) pseudogley formed from reworked, gravel-bearing loam from sandstone, loess loam and syenite over periglacial, syenitic gravel-sand. Up to a depth of one metre, it has a usable field capacity of 153 millimetres. The topographically induced surplus of radiation amounts to 2,051 kilowatt-hours per square metre.
Winegrowing in Pesterwitz has been documented since 1552. The historical vineyard at Jochhöhschlößchen was destroyed by phylloxera around 1900. The current vineyard was newly planted in 1986 at another site, while retaining the historical name.
Cultivation and Grape Varieties
The 8.4-hectare site has been farmed by Gut Pesterwitz since 1998. The varieties planted are Bacchus, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Goldriesling, Weißburgunder, Solaris, Helios, Scheurebe, Dornfelder and Regent. Riesling from the sunniest areas is hand-harvested gently.
Wine Styles and Maturation
The winery produces white, rosé and red wines. Documented styles include dry Riesling, a semi-dry white cuvée, Regent Weißherbst, red Regent and rosé Secco. Maturation takes place at the family winery Schuh in Sörnewitz. For the rosé Secco, Regent grapes are first processed into Regent Weißherbst and then matured as Secco.
