Location and Landscape
The Freiburger Jesuitenschloss vineyard lies south of Freiburg im Breisgau at the foot of Lorettoberg and Schönberg, near the State Viticulture Institute. The associated Jesuitenschloß is located in Merzhausen in the growing region Baden.
The site, which faces north-west, is at an altitude of 280 to 370 metres above sea level and has a slope of 10 to 30 percent. Geological materials mentioned include gneiss, sandstone, limestone and loess; in addition, fertile loam and loess-weathered soils characterise the site.
Grape Varieties and Classification
The VDP-classified area comprises 41.00 hectares. The classified grape varieties listed are Grauer Burgunder, Spätburgunder and Gutedel. The State Winery Freiburg works in the vineyard.
Freiburger Jesuitenschloss is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® in the Baden growing region.
History of the Jesuitenschloß
On 10 February 1635, the Schnewlin-Bernlapp family of Bollschweil presented the Jesuitenschloß to the Jesuits. The manor house bears the year 1666. Since 1985, the Stiftungsweingut Freiburg of the Heiliggeistspitalstiftung has been located on the estate.
