Location and Classification
In the Layfelsen there is an identified single-vineyard site in Hammerstein, in the cadastral district of Niederhammerstein. It belongs to the wine-growing region Mittelrhein, to the Loreley area and to the Großlage Burg Hammerstein. In the 2024 register of wine-growing sites, a planted area of 3.1 hectares is recorded.
Relief and Soil
The site lies at about 60 to 135 metres above sea level and has a steep slope gradient. The exposure ranges from south-west to south-east; a viticultural description specifies south-south-west and a gradient of around 30 to 60 per cent. The soils registered are sandy loam and slate. Geological documentation also indicates sandstone intercalations within and above the rock formations of the site and neighbouring Hammerstein wine sites.
Climate
In the Layfelsen, the site is considered to be relatively protected on both sides and to have only a few late-frost events. Dark slate, greywacke and vineyard walls store the warmth of the day and release it again at night. This contributes to a warm local viticultural climate.
Variety and Wine Style
The site is particularly suitable for growing Riesling. For In den Layfelsen, among other things, a Riesling from old vines of the 2021 vintage is documented. The wines are described as fruit-forward and elegant, with slate-driven mineral character and a generous bouquet; they are also considered fresh and are associated with peach aromas. The official vineyard site number is 320104.
