Location and classification
Hungerberg is a classified vineyard site in Winterbach in the Rems valley, around 25 kilometres east of Stuttgart. The site belongs to the wine-growing region Württemberg and is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.
Topography and soil
The site, oriented to the south-south-west, lies at about 310 to 400 metres above sea level. Its slope gradient is 30 to 60 percent; the soil is classified as Keuper. The classified area covers 1.30 hectares.
Grape varieties and wine
As classified grape varieties, the VDP lists Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder. The 2023 vintage of the Winterbacher Hungerberg Grosses Gewächs was produced from 100 percent Weißburgunder and aged in barrique. The wine is described as dense and concentrated, with a mineral structure and a long-lasting finish.
Historical winegrowing
Winterbach was once a significant winegrowing municipality. After phylloxera and other problems in viticulture, including the removal of vines that were not resistant in the years 1910 and 1911, Hungerberg remained as the municipal vineyard site. A historical winegrowers’ shelter was used during the grape harvest by the vineyard districts Hungerberg and Wanne. Historical vineyard walls in the area of Hungerberg were built with hard stone from a former local quarry.
