Hummelberg

Location and landscape

Hummelberg is a vineyard site above Östringen in Baden, in the Kraichgau landscape in the southwest of Germany. The Honold winery is located between the vineyards on Hummelberg.

Climate and soils

The site is described by its manager as mild. The predominant soil and geological materials of the vineyard sites Hummelberg and Rosenkranzweg include loess clay, Keuper and Buntsandstein.

Cultivation

The area of vines on Hummelberg covers 8 hectares. Cultivation follows a nature-oriented approach, with a consciously allowed partial self-regulation of the vineyard and acceptance of lower yields. On the Östringen Hummelberg, fungus-resistant varieties are grown, including Sauvignac, Cabernet Cortis and Cabernet Blanc; according to the manager, they only have to be sprayed rarely.

Wines and ageing

Among other things, a dry Hummelberg Riesling Réserve from the 2021 vintage and an Östringen Hummelberg Muscaris as Spätlese from the 2011 vintage are documented. From selected parcels, wines with site indications are produced, including Réserve wines with ageing in barrique. Documented cellar practices include longer contact with lees and temperature control.
