Location and boundaries
Hummelberg is a vineyard designation in the municipal area of Gerbrunn in Bavaria, east and south-east of the village. The documented areas are located, among other places, on Haslachweg, near Gieshügeler Straße at the boundary with Randersacker, as well as north of Gerbrunn on the south slope of the Kürnacher Berg. The south-eastern parcel is documented as a steep-slope vineyard.
Soil and cultivation
For wines with the designation Gerbrunner Hummelberg, shell limestone is documented as the soil and, respectively, the terroir. A parcel planted in 2014 by Weingut Edwin Huttner is irrigated with collected rainwater from the roof of a machine hall. Weingut Ludwig Schmitt describes the cultivation and development of its wines from the Gerbrunner Hummelberg as close to nature.
Grape varieties and wine styles
Documented wines come, among other things, from Bacchus, Silvaner, Blue Silvaner, Scheurebe, Weißburgunder, Riesling, Spätburgunder and Domina. Dry and also delicately off-dry or semi-dry white wines are documented, as are dry red wines, a dry Spätburgunder Weißherbst and a semi-dry red ling. A documented Spätburgunder from Weingut Ludwig Schmitt was fermented on the skins and matured in barrique.
History and wine law
The vineyard designation Hummelberg is first documented for the year 1764. In the official Bavarian vineyard directory, Gerbrunn Hummelberg is assigned to the Franconian winegrowing region and the MainSüden area. Certain parcels appear there under the Großlage Ewig Leben; in addition, Gerbrunn Hummelberg is listed as being free of Großlagen. The region is located in Franconia.
