Location and classification
The Honey Hill is a single vineyard site within the municipality and district of Sprendlingen. It lies in the Bingen area of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen and belongs to the Großlage Abtey.
Topography and soils
The 53-hectare vineyard lies at an altitude of around 120 to 250 metres and is oriented from west to south-west. The soil consists of marl, or Pelosol, a calcareous, clayey sediment of the Tertiary period.
The deep, highly calcareous clay has a high proportion of clay minerals that are able to swell. It is rich in nutrients, only limited in permeability and aeration, warms up moderately, and is difficult for rooting through.
Wine character and grape varieties
The regional terroir profile combines this type of soil with full-bodied, dense and rich wines with moderate acidity and a creamy mouthfeel. The fruit tastes ripe and expressive, including notes of mango, apricot and honeydew melon; the finish is fruit-forward and full-bodied.
