Location and classification
Honigberg is an officially listed single vineyard in the municipality and cadastral district of Ludwigshöhe. It belongs to the Nierstein area and the Großlage Krötenbrunnen in Rheinhessen. In the 2024 wine-growing sites directory, it is listed under number 720519 and comprises 83.8 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Altitude and soils
The wine-growing site lies at about 80 to 90 metres above sea level. Its soils consist of gravel, sand and loam, or Rigosol, and are described as river deposits formed during the Ice Age. The moderately shallow, stony and sandy loam is well-drained and aerated, low in nutrients, neutral to acidic and warms up well.
Water balance and wine character
The soils have a comparatively low storage capacity for water available to plants; in dry years, there is therefore a risk of water stress. The site profile assigns Honigberg a Pinot-breeding orientation and rather places it among red wines. It is described as having herbal, spice-like aromas, as well as a firm, juicy and dense style with potential for ageing. One winemaker from Ludwigshöhe cites Silvaner as an example of a light, fresh wine from this location.
