Geographical location
The Dromersheimer Honigberg is an officially designated single-vineyard site in the district of Dromersheim of Bingen am Rhein. The site belongs to the Bingen area of the quality wine region Rheinhessen and to the Großlage St. Rochuskapelle.
Site and soils
The planted area comprises 111 hectares. The Honigberg lies at an altitude of 140 to 265 metres and is oriented to the west as far as south-west. The soils are classified as marl and pararendzina and consist of calcareous loams and sands from deposits of the Tertiary sea. The soil profile is characterised by deep, calcareous clay with a high proportion of spring clay; the soils are nutrient-rich, strongly calcareous, moderately warming and comparatively difficult for root penetration.
Wine profile and grape varieties
The regional expert description links the site with dense, powerful and full-bodied wines with balanced acidity as well as persistent fruit, structure and fullness. For white wines, notes of ripe tropical and stone fruit are described; for red wines, dark fruit and smoky spice. Documented vineyard areas include, among others, Scheurebe, Pinot blanc, Spätburgunder, Merlot, Dornfelder and Cabernet Cubin. A historical report describes for Dromersheim mainly white wine and already lists the Honigberg about a hundred years ago as a designation of wine-growing sites.
