Location and classification
The Honigberg is a legally classified single-vineyard site in Biebelsheim in the Bingen area of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The Großlage is St. Rochuskapelle.
Soils
The site comprises soil types marl/pelosol and loess/para-rendzina. The marl soil is a deep, calcareous clay from tertiary marine deposits with a high proportion of swelling clay, limited water and air permeability, and a high content of nutrients and limestone. Loess/para-rendzina consists of deep, fertile, calcareous loam with good water retention and good root penetrability.
Grape varieties and wine style
At the Honigberg, among others, Dornfelder, Merlot, Bacchus, Spätburgunder, Silvaner and Huxelrebe are planted. The marl soil is combined with dense, full-bodied wines with moderate acidity and ripe fruit. On loess/para-rendzina, wines are produced that are fruit-forward, medium in strength and refreshing, with mild acidity and early drinking maturity.
