Location and classification
Homburg is an officially registered winegrowing site in Gössenheim in the Maindreieck in Franken. The vineyards lie below the Homburg castle ruins. The name of the site is derived from the castle ruins and the noble family associated with the elevated position. Homburg Gössenheim is entered in the Bavarian winegrowing sites register as an admissible geographical designation for quality wines and Prädikat wines.
Site and soils
The south-facing vineyards show documented slope gradients of around 25 to 50 percent. For the site, a distinct microclimate with sunny exposures is described. The soils contain small fragments of wave limestone from the Lower Muschelkalk, mixed with loess-shaped loam.
Cultivation
Documented plots are located below the Homburg ruins; a Silvaner plot is assigned to the Arnberg. One estate describes a nature-oriented approach for its Homburg plots, as they are located in a protected dry grassland landscape with reference to a European flora-fauna-habitat area.
Varieties and wine styles
Silvaner is documented from the site as a dry wine as well as as Auslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein. There are also wines made from Weißburgunder and Sauvignon Blanc. A dry Weißburgunder and a dry Sauvignon Blanc with the designation Erste Lage are documented. A documented Weißburgunder was aged with 30 percent in small wooden barrels and 70 percent in stainless steel.
