Homberg

Location and classification

The Homberg is a German single vineyard in the municipality of Bechtolsheim. It belongs to the Großlage Petersberg and to the Nierstein area in Rheinhessen. The vineyard area covers 62 hectares. The altitude ranges from about 160 to 245 metres; the exposition varies from east to north.

Soils

The documented soils include deep, calcareous and clay-rich marl, or Pelosol from calcareous deposits of the Tertiary sea. This soil has clay that can take up water, limited water flow and aeration, a high nutrient content, and difficult rooting conditions. In addition, loess-Pararendzina occurs from calcareous dust deposited during the Ice Ages. It is fertile, deep and calcareous, consists of clayey silt and has good water retention and rooting conditions.

Wines

From the Bechtolsheimer Homberg, wines made from Scheurebe, Müller-Thurgau, Green Silvaner, Grey Burgundy, Dornfelder and Regent are documented. The range includes dry, gently off-dry and fruity wines, as well as red wines and a red-wine cuvée. A dry Green Silvaner is described as balanced and elegant, with aromas of apple and pear. A dry Regent ripened in barrique and is described with notes of vanilla and a full-bodied texture. The Dornfelder is a Qualitätswein b.A. with a full-bodied character as well as notes of blackcurrant and sour cherry.

Name and history

The wine-growing site is documented for the year 1501 under the name „uff dem homberge“. The name Homberg is considered a shortening and adaptation of „Hohenberg“ in the sense of „high hill“. The documented wines are listed as Qualitätswein b.A.; the site itself is classified as a single vineyard in the Nierstein area.
