Hohnart

Location and Terroir

Casteller Hohnart is located in Castell in Franken. The south to south-west facing site lies at an altitude of about 290 metres and has a slope of 25 to 40 per cent. The soils consist of violet Letten Keuper and clay marl; the further terroir of Castell is characterised by gypsum Keuper.

Climate and Viticulture

The warm, sunny location reaches high temperatures during the day, while cooler nights support the ripening of the grapes. The classified vineyard comprises 6.74 hectares and is farmed by the Fürstlich Castell’schen Domäne as VDP.ERSTE LAGE. Hohnart is a monopole site in its sole ownership and also includes old-vine plantings.

Grape Varieties and Wine Style

For Casteller Hohnart, Silvaner and Riesling are documented as the classified grape varieties. The dry wines show fruity aromas, spicy minerality and a warm-sited character.

History and Ageing

The vineyard was mentioned in 1266 as an important Casteller wine site and was previously a wooded hill. For documented Hohnart wines of the 2022 vintage, fermentation took place spontaneously and ageing lasted for one year on the lees in Casteller oak barrels.
