Hohenrain

Site and soils

Hohenrain is a legally registered single site in Knöringen in the winegrowing region Pfalz in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The soils are characterised by loess loam with a lime content; beneath the humus horizon, a chalk layer is documented.

Grape varieties and wines

White Burgundy (Weißburgunder) is grown in Hohenrain. For Knöringer Hohenrain, Riesling and Gewürztraminer are also documented. The wines include dry Qualitätswein from White Burgundy and dry Riesling, as well as a delicately off-dry Gewürztraminer Kabinett.

Farming and maturation

With a documented Knöringer Hohenrain White Burgundy, the yield is limited to a few ripe grapes by green harvest. The grapes are picked by hand after selective selection and an assessment of the ripeness date. The wine ferments under temperature control, matures in stainless steel vessels, and receives an extended fine lees ageing.
