Location and History
Knöringen is a municipality in the district of Südliche Weinstraße and belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Landau-Land in the southern Pfalz. The place was founded in the 6th century as a Frankish settlement and was first mentioned in a document in 775 under the name “Cnoringen” in the Lorscher Codex.
Viticulture
Knöringen is documented as a wine-growing municipality and a winemakers’ village. The wine site Hohenrain belongs in the winegrowing region of Pfalz to the area of Südliche Weinstraße and to the Großlage Bischofskreuz. It is listed as an official wine site under number 810111; for the 2024 harvest, 147.9 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded.
Historic Cellars in the Ground
In Knöringen there are historic cellars in the ground, which were dug into clayey soil and extend up to around ten metres into the earth. The 13 documented cellars were used by local farmers for storing potatoes and vegetables at a comparatively constant temperature of about 5 to 7 °C.
