Hohenkottenheim

Location and surroundings

Hohenkottenheim is a registered vineyard site near Markt Nordheim in the wine region Franconia. The vineyard site is associated with Hohenkottenheim, an approximately 423-metre-high hill about 600 metres from Markt Nordheim.

Cultural landscape

On Hohenkottenheim there is a former castle site. The hill, its vineyards and the preserved castle ruins are described by the municipality as a local cultural landscape.

Grape varieties and wines

For a parcel of 0.12 hectares, Bacchus and Pinot Blanc are documented. In addition, wines from the site are also listed with Müller-Thurgau, Riesling and Merlot. The Riesling is a dry German quality wine, while the dry Pinot Blanc also comes from the site.

Historical reference

In 1693, the House of Schwarzenberg began selling orchards, vineyards, meadows and fields below Hohenkottenheim. These areas had remained unworked since the Thirty Years’ War. A Merlot from the site is aged in barrique.
