Location and landscape
Markt Nordheim is a wine-growing municipality in the southern Steigerwald region and belongs to the Franconian wine region. The settlement lies below the elevation of Hohenkottenheim. Above the town, the Geroldsbach rises, flows through Markt Nordheim and empties into the Kleine Ehe.
Viticulture
The municipality’s wine-growing area includes the sites of Hohenkottenheim and Huttenberg. According to information from the Mittelfränkische Bocksbeutelstraße, the vineyard area covers about 18 hectares. The vineyards are structured on a small scale; farming and viticulture continue to shape the use of the land. In the sites of Hohenkottenheim and Huttenberg, red and white grape varieties are grown.
History
Markt Nordheim was first mentioned in a document in 1231. In 1730 the town was granted market rights; in 1912 the official name Markt Nordheim was approved.
Hohenkottenheim
The Hohenkottenheim vineyard site is also documented as the site of a hilltop castle. The complex is initially associated with the Lords of Kottenheim and later with the Lords of Seinsheim; the castle complex was created between the 12th and 16th centuries.
