Location and soil
Höllhagen is a small single-vineyard site with around three hectares at the edge of Kirchhofen, near Pfaffenweiler, in Baden. The vineyard is west-facing and lies on a steep westward slope break. The soil consists of heavy, deep loam and clay with some loess.
Grape varieties and farming
In the upper part of the site, Spätburgunder is planted. In addition, Gewürztraminer plantings and wines from Höllhagen are documented. The vineyards of the Köpfer winery, including the Kirchhofener Höllhagen, have been farmed organically since 1978; the winery is a member of ECOVIN.
Maturation
For the documented Spätburgunder from the 2019 vintage, the wine matured to two thirds in large wooden casks and to one third in small French oak barrels. Bottling took place unfiltered.
