Location and Topography
The Höllenpfad is a vineyard site near Roxheim in the Nahe growing region. The site, which is south-facing and situated 150 to 200 metres above sea level, has a slope of 15 to 65 percent and lies in a secluded side valley of the middle Nahe.
Soil and Cultivation
The geological subsoil consists of red sandstone. The calcareous weathering soil that formed from it is well-drained and stores heat effectively. The south-facing aspect, the steepness and the soil all favour good heat absorption and warming of the vineyards. The classified vineyard area covers 34.59 acres. In cultivation, Riesling and Spätburgunder are grown; for the Riesling, 10 to 40-year-old vines and a yield of around 45 hectolitres per hectare are documented.
Wine and Cellaring
The Riesling from the Roxheimer Höllenpfad is described as dry. It shows spicy fruit aromas, a pronounced, fine acidity and a peppery character, which is linked to the red sandstone. Selective hand harvesting takes place at 100 per cent. After picking, it is gently pressed; fermentation and ageing take place in traditional large wooden barrels and in stainless-steel tanks.
Name and Classification
Höllenpfad is an old vineyard name. The term “Hölle” is explained as a possible reference to the steep slope and the distinctive red colour of the sandstone. The Roxheimer Höllenpfad has been classified by the VDP as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®; this VDP classification is not regulated in German wine law.
