Topography and soils
The VDP profile specifies a south to south-west aspect, an elevation of 190 to 250 metres above sea level, and slope gradients of 5 to 30 percent. For its parcels in Burg Layer Hölle, Weingut Pieroth states a south to south-east aspect, 195 to 290 metres in height, and gradients of 2 to 25 percent. The soils are described as heavily weathered grey slate with clay as well as loess, clay, stone and quartzite.
Grape varieties and classification
Riesling is given as the selected grape variety for the site. Weingut Pieroth cultivates 4.7 hectares there, predominantly with Riesling. Burg Layer Hölle is classified as a VDP.First Estate site (VDP.Erste Lage).
Wines and ageing
Documented are dry Rieslings from Burg Layer Hölle with the designation VDP.First Estate wine (VDP.Erstes Gewächs). Schlossgut Diel describes for its Riesling a gentle pressing as well as fermentation and maturation with natural yeasts in multi-year small oak barrels. The Burg Layer Hölle Riesling 2020 by Weingut Pieroth matured for ten months on the lees, partly in the traditional small barrel and partly in stainless steel.
