Location and Aspect
Hölle is a named wine-growing site in Alf in Germany’s Mosel wine-growing region. The Alfer Hölle lies directly below Waldfrieden house and is oriented to the south-east.
Soil and Vineyard Areas
The site has deep, iron-bearing red slate soil with a lot of humus and fine earth. The soil is described as sufficiently supplied with water to support vine growth even in dry years. The site covers about 1.7 hectares and is described by the associated winery as its largest contiguous vineyard area.
Grape Varieties and Wines
In the site there are roughly 8,000 Riesling vines aged about 50 years, as well as 1,000 Cabernet Sauvignon vines aged around 30 years. The Riesling wines are described as powerful and suitable for long ageing.
Documented Maturation
For the documented bottling Alfer Hölle 1900 Riesling, the grapes are pressed directly, fermented and matured for eight months in a traditional 10-hectolitre wooden cask. The biological acid reduction is partly incomplete.
