Location on the Moselle and the Alf stream
Alf lies at the confluence of the Alf stream and the Moselle. The settlement stretches from the bank of the Moselle into the side valley of the Alf stream. Steep vineyards, wooded heights and meadows shape the narrow river landscape of the Moselle.
Viticulture in Alf
Alf belongs to the Moselle wine-growing region Mosel, to the wine-growing district of Burg Cochem and to the Großlage Grafschaft. The local vineyard sites are documented as Burggraf, Herrenberg, Hölle, Kapellenberg, Katzenkopf and Kronenberg. In the 2024 vineyard register, Herrenberg with 1.2 hectares and Hölle with 1.8 hectares are recorded; Burggraf and Kapellenberg each cover less than one hectare.
Grape variety and wine style
For wines from the named Alf vineyard sites, Riesling is documented. Wines from the Moselle are described predominantly as fruity, mineral white wines with moderate alcohol content, ranging from dry through fine off-dry to sweet.
Historical evidence
Alf is documented in the year 963 as Eilba. Later historical forms of the place name are Alve, Albe, Alben and Alffe. In the year 1144, the place was referred to as Biscopesalve and at that time was archbishopric property.
